WEEK 2

STRUCTURE AND FORM

Simona Koch "Europe. The Future of History", Kunsthaus Zürich, 2015

This moving image piece explores the ideas of what boarders actually are, how and why they came into existence. This piece of work makes me think about why boarders have changed so much and why it matters to separate different countries to one another, not only are boarders a physical aspect of the world but they mean more to politics compared to when they were first made, looking at the traces of humankind which is a special interest of Simona Koch.

They create identities for people as the nationality of a person is what people normally share first about themselves. This is a very fluid piece of work, as it shows you how the boarders have changed overtime and that they aren't actually fixed, which makes me think about how they are going to change in my lifetime. I am also interested in the medium of how this piece of work is made, drawing, erasing, changing and repeating this process, leaving a lot of negative space and would like to try using this technique in my own work

WEEK 3

SURFACE AND MEANING

Micheal Rakowitz "paraSITE 1997"

This product design sculpture, designed by the artist Micheal Rakowitz, addressees the masssive problem of homelessness around the world. His idea is was to create a shelter that would protect the victims of attackers whilst they sleep, as they are a target to criminals. They work by attaching to the air vents outside of building which not only inflate the product but also keep it ventalated and warm quint cold nights. looking at this piece makes me think about if I can design a sculpture that can help benefit other people? not only is this a piece of art, its a relief to people who are living on the streets. this practical idea also highlights the problems of homelessness to people who walk past, due to it drawing attention to itself, as people are more likely to stop and look at this and help, rather than a man who is just sleeping on the streets with nothing, which people typically ignore and pretent they don't see them as they feel scared or threatened.

WEEK 4

LANGUAGE AND INTERATION

Eva hesse: "No Title, 1996-70"

This sculpture that is created using latex, rope, wire and string is the vision that Eva hess wanted to create to reflect on her emotional struggles she went though in her short life. She wanted to create art that wasn't "art", " I wanted to get to nonart, nonconnotive, nonanthropomorphic, nongeometric, non, nothing, everything, but of another kind, vision, sort, from a total other reference point," experimenting with techniques that would fulfil this idea, Hessa was very successful in doing so. The title of this piece if extremely interesting to me, as it leave it open for anyone to interpretate it how they want to, highlighting the fact that she knows how open her art is, and not giving anyone a direction of what this piece is about.

This Art work was created whilst she was dying, the suspended latex on rope, where some parts are touching the floor, as it stays still. when looking at this oleic and after doing research of Eva Hesse, I begin to ask myself weather this sculpture symbolises the whole of her short life, the suspension of the rope could represent how she has been suspended/stopped from living her life? the Rope is used to tie things up which could also represent how she felt trapped most of her life, I feel as if the materials she used represent things that are very personal to her.

WEEK 4 25/09/19

Research Task :

Jenny Holzer

I came across the artist Jenny Holzer, who focuses on graphic design and the communication of letters and words. When looking at her work, I feel a sense of relief as I feel Graphic Communication has given her a platform to share all of her feelings and thoughts on the world and also personal things. The statements she uses to publically  show all make me think about the meaning behind it, if I agree or disagree, the 4 images above are the ones I felt I could relate to the. most and that I always think about .

Figure One is very feministic and refers around todays society about hoe men have changed referring at how dating has changed, An article by Vice, talks about the current generation and how much its changed, "there's no such thing as a 'Forth Date' anymore" which is what I think about when looking at this peice, The use of a condom packet has a huge relevance in this artwork as its the main contraception of what men use, which creates irony as its the emotional effects that the statement is talking about.

when looking Figure Two makes me feel like Im not alone as it explores how when youre alone/ in bed going to sleep, your thoughts keep you awake, the "voice" can sometimes be quite scary and releases anxiety, however this piece of work allows people to know that it happens to everyone, creating an awareness around mental heath which I think is very important.

Figure Three has inspired me to create my graphic communication and design one day workshop, as money is one of the only thing that inspires people to go work, or do things which will create a "taste" for something, if someone wasn't getting paid to do a job, they most lily wouldn't do it, as money is a fundemental part of survival, yet so many people are in poverty, this piece allows people to think about what money is, and the importance of money, as when I look at this statement, I wanted to research what money is, after my Research, money used to represent silver and gold, and each country would have the amount of money based on how much silver/gold they owned, this ended between 1933-1968.  I now believe that money is corrupt, and I want to continue these ideas in future projects

Barbra Kruger "I shop therefore I am, 1987"

Barbra Kruger is a graphic designer who explores the power of text and image, her work combines a black and white photography with a red and white boarder and text, the colour red is a very striking a vibrant colour, its associated with power which links to her main idea of using the power of text and image to put across a point. This specific piece focuses on the idea of materialistic consumption, where most people would chose materialistic and items of value, which have branding over it, rather than the basic product, which makes me think about how we live in a world where image is everything.

Claude Heath: "Buddah" 1996

This blindfolded experimental piece of  work  makes me think about the human mind and how powerful it is, as you don't need your eyes to draw and make art. its is clear that the artists knows the structure of the facial features very well, as he is able to draw it from imagination and also not being aware of where the pen is as he draws, the different colours used add a lot of depth to the drawing as it stops it from looking messy and allows you to see more details with in the face, when looking at this work it makes me think about how the human brain works and what the limits are when you remove the sense it relies on the most, which is sight and how art can be created because of this, if you were to remove any other of the 5 senses there would not be any impact in art created, which I find extremely interesting as each sense appears to be as important as one another, yet sight is clearly the most important one, which is explored in this piece of work.

Oscar Murillo: Manifestation of Loss, 23

This Multimedia artwork, that was created by the Colombian artist Oscar Murillo, includes a lot of imagery, when looking at this work, I ask my self the following questions, what do all of these things represent? the colours? the symbol of a pig? or the words used with in this painting? the first question I want to be able to answer is what is the relevance and meaning  of the pig, using the words he has written across this painting the word "Global" allows me to begin to link these two together, as he travels between countries, and moved from Colombia when he was 10 to the UK, knowing very little English, helps me answer some of the questions when looking at this piece, as pigs are greedy animals, this could represent at how greedy the world has become and all the problems because of it, in an interview the artist stated that he wants 'to hold a up a mirror to this county' so they could see the damage that its created. due to how chaotic this image is, it could represent how chaotic the world is, I am also thinking about the significance of the colours that are used within this piece as the greens and blues used are also  the colour of the earth, which links back to the use of the world 'global' in terms of my own work, the idea of how greedy this world has become, it inspired me to use the dollar sign in my graphic design & communication day project as I chose the typography of "it$ not a free world" from the text messages, this area of focus still really interests me and I would like to develop this idea further in future work.
